Abstract
Publication is dealing with public health as the scientific discipline and the most of the important domains of public health is described and discussed. The are the following: Social economic determinants of health, social inequalities in health, assessment of population health status, world health systems, health related quality of life, quality assurance in the health care and patient safety, health promotion and others.
Current trends in health systems are also described. Special attention is paid to the Czech health care system and its development after 1989.
