Therapy of mental disorders in old age

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2012

Abstract

Pharmacotherapy in elderly patients has its specifics; greater caution is required in both the choice and dosage of pharmaceuticals. Some pharmaceuticals that are safe in younger people (for example tricyclic antidepressants) need to be avoided altogether.

It is necessary to be especially cautious about unsuitable combinations of drugs and to avoid excessive polypharmacy. The article lists basic general principles of administering pharmacotherapy in patients of senior age.
