Arterial Duplex Ultrasonography and transcutaneous Oxygen Tension - when to examine?

Abstract

Patients with peripheral arterial disease and non-healing diabetic foot ulcers do not often undergo adequate vascular evaluation and subsequent revascularisation. However, correct indication of angiography is necessary and an objective non-invasive assessement of perfusion may include transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO2) and arterial duplex ultrasonography (DUS).

Aim of our study was to compare prospectively the efficacy of TcPO2 and DUS to indicate angiography in patients with non-healing diabetic foot ulcer. We describe the examination of TcPO2 and DUS in 35 patients.

Significant difference (p<0.05) in discordance between DUS and TcPO2 was demonstrated in our pilot study.
