Surgery for colorectal cancer in elderly patients

Abstract

Age of patients operated for colorectal carcinoma is an important factor for postoperative survival and for five year survival. If other prognostic factors are included, effect of age on survival decreases.

Postoperative mortality is more influenced by comorbidity and complications than the age of the patient. Age alone should not be a contraindication of radical operation.
