The Pilot Project sponsored by the General Health Insurance Company, has evaluated the feasibility of applying selected thyroid tests in all women in the first trimester of pregnancy. Alltogether 2937 women were examined and the results proved, that thyreopathy screening may be applied, the blood tests between 9>-11week of pregnancy may be made together with general screening for chromosomal abnormalities.
The fact, that 7-10% of pregnant women don’t know about their thyroid disease (mostly the lower function and /or TPOab positivity) warrants broader discussion about benefits of universal thyroid screening in pregnancy.
