Abstract

Dyspepsia is the medical term for impaired digestion or indigestion. It consists of various symptoms in the upper and lower abdomen.

The prevalence of dyspepsia in the western world ranges roughly between 20% and 25%. Dyspepsia can be divided into three basic categories: organic - primary, secondary and functional.

Functional dyspepsia is defined as a condition in which abdominal symptoms occur in the absence of an organic disease that would explain them. Aetiology and pathogenesis id functional dyspepsia are multifactorial.

Basic diagnostic evalution of dyspepsia includes gastrointestinal endoscopy, abdominal ultrasonography and laboratory testing. Therapy modalities are mainly based on empirical and symptomatic grounds.
