Experimental study of the development of the embryonic vasculature and myocardium

Abstract

Our results demonstrate that normal embryonic vascular development involves HIF-VEGF regulatory cascade induced by areas of tissue hypoxia. Experimentally enhanced moderate level of hypoxia resulted in over-expression of HIFs and VEGF followed by increased density of developing vessels.

These data indicate that embryonic angiogenesis is responsive to environmental oxygen tension and therefore is not entirely genetically controlled.
