Quality of vision is greatly influenced by higher order aberrations (HOAs). Knowledge of the HOAs of the human eye is useful because they can be managed by means of wavefront-guided laser ablation or by appropriate artificial intraocular lens choice in cataract surgery.
The study evaluates HOAs in healthy population over 40 years of age and their correlation with age, refractive error and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The results showed increase in spherical aberration Z(4,0) and increase in root mean square (RMS) of the 3rd and 4th order aberrations with age.
Further there was a negative correlation between BCVA and secondary astigmatism Z(4,2), and between BCVA and vertical coma Z(3,-1). A positive correlation between hyperopia and RMS of the 3rd and 4th order aberrations, Z(4,0) and horizontal come Z(3,1) was found.
