Abstract

Depression remains under recognized and undertreated condition, although it is a leading cause of disease burden. Many instruments are available to enhance the assessment, screening, diagnosing and monitoring treatment, as well as evidence-based treatment guidelines.

Establishing a therapeutic alliance with patients and their families, referring to psychiatric specialist if needed, choosing and optimizing the dose of appropriate antidepressants based on individual patient’s needs, and incorporating psychotherapeutic and other nonpharmacological treatment strategies are necessary. Sequenced treatment measurement based care produces better outcomes compared with treatment as usual.
