Bacterial diarrheal infections

Abstract

Bacterial etiology represents 80% of all diarrheal illnesses at travellers. The most common are enterotoxigenic (ETEC) and enteroaggregative (EAggEC) strains of Escherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella sp. a Shigella sp.

Less common are infections caused by Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Yersinia enterocolitica. Clinical signs and symptomes include diarrhea that may containe blood and pus, abdominal cramps anf fever.

Diagnostics depends on the stool culture. Treatment is based on the oral or intravenous rehydratation.

Antibiotics are not used usually.
