Abstract

In the article the authors are pointing out the importance of thyroid hormones in pregnancy. They are emphasizing the necessity of sufficient iodine intake during the whole duration of pregnancy and breast – feeding – iodine is the basic element for thyroxin.

According to the fact, that reduced activity of thyroid takes place asymptomatically, it is necessary to consider screening examination of pregnant women at the beginning of gravidity. This recommendation is based on experiences from the pilot project in the Czech Republic in the years 2009 – 2010.

In asymptomatic women in the first trimester of pregnancy TSH elevation was found in 7% of women and positive antibodies in 8,9% out of 3000 women exmined.
