Metabolic and nutritional aspects of the gastrointestinal tract disorders

Abstract

The chapter presents classification, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnostics, differential diagnostics of individual GIT disorders and their relationship to malnutrition. Special interest is given to management of these disorders.

Individual sections devoted to acute and chronic gastritis (atrophic gastritis), postresectional states, bariatric operations, coeliac sprue, Whipple´s disease, tropical sprue, disaccharidase deficiencies (inborn and acquired), inflammatory bowel disease (especially Crohn´s disease), syndrome bacterial overgrowth, and intestinal fistulas. The section dealing with disorders of liver and biliary tract contains cholestatic syndromes, liver cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as hepatopathies induced by enteral and parenteral nutrition.

In detail there are stated nutritional aspects of acute and chronic pancreatitis, as well as principles of nutritional support in pancreatic disorders.
