Abstract

Metabolic surgery means surgical intervention in the normal gastrointestinal tract anatomy, which aim is not only the reduction of overweight, but also quick and substantial correction of the metabolic disorders, in particular diabetes. The most probable mechanism of action is the preclusion of contact of meals with duodenal and jejunal mucous membrane and suppresion of the hypothetic incretin effect.

The most frequent surgical therapy is the gastric by-pass. Similar effect - remission of the diabetes - has the insertion of duodenal-jejunal by-pass sleeve.
