Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus-like skin lesions in a patient carrying a novel hydroxymethylbilane synthase mutation

Abstract

In one patient, acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) were diagnosed. LSA is an autoimmune disease of unknown origin that is closely related to other inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases.

Associations between photosensitive autoimmune skin diseases such as photosensitizing porphyrias have been recognized. AIP normally does not lead to photosensitization in affected individuals.

In conclusion, an association between AIP and LSA in this patient cannot be excluded.
