Before IPP have been introduced, sir JW Black discovered H2-receptor (received the Nobel prize in 1988) and consequently H2 blockers have been discovered. H2-blockers brought the first revolution in gastroenterology because the first really effective treatment OF peptic ulcer disease.
In 1976 came cimetidine and in 1981 ranitidine. The development of PPIs started in 1967 in a company ASTRA.
At the end of this research was omeprazol, the first proton pump inhibitor. These drugs are the most potent inhibitors of acid secretion and are used in patients with ulcers, dyspepsia, reflux disease or NSAIDs gastropathy.
Omeprazol was followed by lansoprazol and pantoprazol. The last drug of this group has recently been introduced in the Czech republic – esomeprazol.
