Yeast infections of skin and mucosa

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2011

Abstract

Candidosis is the most known superficial yeast infection affecting the mucosa, skin and nails. Candida albicans is the commonest aetiological agent but in the last 20 years infections caused by non-albicans Candida species began to emerge.

Lipophilic Malassezia fungi (formerly Pityrosporum) are now also classified as yeasts. The most frequent agent is Malassezia furfur causing pityriasis versicolor.

Aetiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of superficial yeast infections are discussed.
