Risk factors for creation and recurrence of thromboembolic disease (TEN)

Abstract

Epidemiological research in the past decades has revealed many new facts concerning the relative significance of individual risk factors for thrombosis. Their influence on the development of first thrombosis spans from minimal (e.g. obesity, smoking, long travels, hyperhomocysteinemia) to significant risk increase (e.g. deficiency of anti-coagulation proteins, malignancies, traumas, surgical conditions).

The risk of the first event is also different from the risk of recurrences - the latter being higher after idiopathic thrombosis, in severe thrombofilias and in malignancies, depending on the extent of residual thrombotic disorder.
