Trichinellosis

Abstract

Trichinellosis is systemic helmintic infection that is caused by larval stages of nematode Trichinella spiralis or T. britovi. Source of infection is undercocked meat, especially pork or meat of other wild animals.

Trichinellosis has worldwide distribution. Clinical signs include fever, headache, muscle pain and periorbital oedema.

Incubation period is 1 to 2 weeks. Diagnostics is based on serology.

Treatment is symptomatic, corticosteroids may diminish complications in severe cases.
