Historical cartography and its presentation

Abstract

The opening contributition of the seminar was devoted to recontruction and reopening of the map collection. The centenary jubilee of the Map collection showed its historical development and its most outstanding representatives.

The participants were informed about the program of the development of the collection. It was pointed to automatization, digitalization and vizualization.

They were joined to technical catalogization, making metadata and further works from the project TEMAP. The next contribution dealt with the possibility of usage the fond of map collection in historical, regional and political geography on the example of cartographic base of Paris peaceful conference and the process of forming the Czech republic.

The next contribution showed the possibilities of usage of the old maps for studying the changes of the landscape and colonization. We can recognize them, reconstruct and interprete them by the help of old maps.

But the maps are also important for understanding them in the present appearance. The information gained from the old maps are used both in basic sphere and aplied research.

The contribution of detection of cartographic projection from the map and its usage for georeference of map dealt with this problem and also with estimate of approximate value of parametres of representation. The information of estimated cartographic projection can be used for improving the geoconference of the map or the studying its geographic qualities.

The development of metadata catalogue for making old maps accessible was introduced. The common pilot project of the czech memory institutions was published in the contribution Staremapy.cz.

The interested people had on this portal not only the possibility to explore old maps but also the chance to locate them on modern maps like Google Earth or Google Maps. The result of this work was the possibility to seek geographicly and chronologically the maps of the institutions taking place in this exhibition.
