Abstract

This bachelor's thesis named Traditional Method of Transporting Material in the Krkonose Mountains acquaints the readers with the modes of material transportation in the Krkonose Mountains by traditional transport means from the mid 16th century to the present day. As far as transportation is concerned, the colonization by the Alpine residents occurring in the second half of the 16th century was of a great importance.

The colonials coming from the Alps were invited to the Giant Mountains to harvest and subsequently transport timber. They were using traditional means of transportation, as for instance chutes, barrows, wheel-barrows, “loktuše” (square bagging), frame backpacks and sledge, when working in the forest, timber floating or lodge and chalet building.

The specific means of transportation were selected according to the material transported, terrain, season and partially to the gender of the worker. Some of the transportation means gradually changed their purpose.

For example the bob-sleigh was later employed in tourism and nowadays – instead of material transportation – is mainly used as sports equipment. Today, horses are usually employed to draw timber logs down from the areas of higher altitudes.
