The book consists of the first Czech translation of the set of writings of Dionysius of Halicarnassus On the ancient orators (Preface, On Lysias, On Isocrates, On Isaeus, On the style of Demosthenes) and provides an extensive introduction into his thought. It explains the origin of Atticism and clarifies cultural background of the Dionysian literary criticism as well as circumstance of its genesis.
It summarises the main concepts of ancient rhetoric and can be used as an expert introduction into the complex system of ancient knowledge about literary style. The opinion of the author is that Dionysian intention was neither to express theoretical principles nor to give practical advices for the followers of the atticist style.
Rather, Dionysius tried to analyse style of the classical orators in order to appreciate their virtues dealing with the strengths and weaknesses of their speeches.
