The article deals with the phenomenon of so called “Battery of the Dead”, the phenomenon that is closely link to the tradition of Battle of Königgrätz (also known as Battle of Sadowa) taking place in Eastern Bohemia on 3 July 1866. Without any exaggeration, we can stated that from certain point of view “Battery of the Dead” has played crucial role within forming a tradition of commemorative festivities and monuments` creation.
The phenomenon of “Battery of the Dead” can be elaborated from different aspects. Mainly, it is an important distinctive motive of the battle itself, and in wider context, of the whole military campaign as well.
In this respect, spectacular monument located in the central part of the battlefield, serving nowadays as a central point of commemoration ceremonies cannot be omitted from our article either. Besides, “Battery of the Dead” can be also approached as pure military tradition that significantly impacted ideological development of Austro-Hungarian army.
Last but not least, it is a source for various artistic expression, be it giant wall paintings or street ballads.
