Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2013

Abstract

The starting point of the authors is the observation that modern media, while trans-national in effect, always remain linked to a national context due to language and traditions. Individual case histories of the mass media since the beginning of 19th century are presented, the focus is on the role of the mass media in the fundamental politization of European societies during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Also some aspects of intersocietal relations between Czechs, Slovaks and Germans are examined, such as how the media shaped the pictures which they had of one another. Finally, the authors list results and deficits of the research situation with a special view to the particularities applying to East Central Europe.
