This article demonstrates by selected examples from Eastern and Western patristic and scholastic theology that there is a plurality of views concerning this double adequacy of theology - with regards to the acceptability and role of other disciplines as well as with regards to what an adequate relationship to faith consists in. Moreover, the article indicates that it would be a too facile assumption to claim that Eastern theology cultivates more the relationship to faith while Western theology is more concerned with the relationship to other forms of knowledge
