Former Yugoslavia: rule of Europe or exception of the Balkans?

Abstract

Using the geohistorical method of Vives, this paper aims to analyze the disintegration of former Yugoslavia, testing two opposite hypotheses: “the wars in that former country corresponds to an «European rule» - verified through the violent history of the region” and “the wars in that former country are just an «exception of the Balkans» completely restricted”. The first hypothesis is confirmed and the second rejected.

Thus, the paper is also argued that NATO’s intervention, justified by humanitarian help, has not solved the cultural problems, which flow in hatred. On the other hand, the former Yugoslavia led to a huge change in NATO, because from the war in Bosnia NATO transformed its strategic concept, including the crisis management
