The Czech Republic has undergone a transformation of the socio-political and economical system in last 20 years. Among the consequences of the transition has been the transformation of the art field: its topics, technologies, creative and exhibiting strategies, intentions and approaches, artists and spectators.
What role did the media play in this process? Did art and its role in society change from within or based on their reflection? The culture press has a strong tradition in the Czech Republic, as art and culture have compensated political life for big part of the modern and recent history. The need of art reflection in the country where “revolutions happen in theaters“ has been declared.
But with the transformation, the space and attention that media give to promoting, evaluating or explaining art got much smaller. Most part of the art section has moved on-line; especially with the financial crisis, many art or culture-focused periodicals moved on-line completely.
What is the real cause of art and its reflection moving on-line? And isn´t web much more adequate and art-friendly, unsuppressing the formats, supporting discussions? How will the new platform of art reflection change the art-consciousness and understanding? Based on the texts describing the post-communist visual art development (Piotrowski, Bourriaud, Groys) and interviews with the theoreticians, critics and journalists (Pospiszyl, Cisar, Lindaurova, Mecl e.a.), I would like to suggest couple of consequences of the art and media relationship on the background of the transition.
