On Intentions in Intentions Research. Remarks onthe Neophenomenology of Religion of J. Waardenburg

Publication at Hussite Theological Faculty |
2009

Abstract

The paper deals with Waardenburg´s applied hermeneutics of religion, its basis, fundamentals and methods. The author claims unsatisfactory delimitation of the concept of intentions and of their factual research.

The paper comes to the conclusion that even in Waardengurg´s neophenomenology of religion, the research of ('subjective') meanings is based on empathic understanding through which religious experiences of others are reconstructed, whereas special (that is to say religious) competences are required from the scholars of religions. In this sense, the author states that Waardenburg´s key concept of 'intentionality' has failed to overcome the heritage of the classical approach of understanding phenomenology of religions.
