Since a great part of Britain belonged to Roman Empire, it is not surprising to encounter there in the sixth century certain amount of classical culture. Monastic studies may be divided into three main branches 1.
Study of the Latin language; 2. study of theology in its widest sense, including dogma, moral, canon law and ritual; 3. study of the Sacred Scripture, especially of its hidden meanings, according to the method expounded by St. John Cassian and Eucherius.
