Abstract

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a opportunistic infection affecting immunosupressed patients. In haematological or HIV negative patients, PCP presents itself with an acute onset with severe respiratory failure.

The most sensitive imaging technique for pulmonary interstitial damage is HRCT, which should be performed in all immunocompromised patients with suspected pneumonia and normal chest x-ray findings. The most frequent findings in haematological patients are ground glass opacities and reticulations.

In the subsequent course of the disease, consolidation, nodules and cysts develop. Spontaneous pneumothorax may occur at any time.
