Abstract

Since the 80's of the 20th century we can observe the changing paradigm in the approaches to regional concepts that deconstruct the region as a social process. This change brings the region into the interest of scholars as a subject of study and not only as an object or a category for organizing information.

The study of regions is from now on the research topic deserving holistic understanding of geography, broad interdisciplinary approaches as well as local and historical sensitivity. The paper is using the concept of region as social construction based on the combination of territorial, symbolic and institutional shapes.

The regional identity is viewed as one of the most important essence for the very existence of the region and its recognition in the regional system. Regional identity permeates through all above mentioned shapes.

The paper contributes to the discussion on the importance of regional identity in regional development. The case study of Bohemian Paradise region proves the significant influence of natural and landscape features on the process of regional identity reproduction.

Last but not least the paper explores the possibility of regional delimitation according to sense of belonging of its inhabitants.
