Hendrickson's book Diplomacy and War at NATO provides a new view on the diplomacy within NATO. This book attempts to fill a major void in the academic literature on NATO's post-Cold War organisational leadership.
The first four post-Cold War secretaries general and their role in moving the alliance towards military action are examined in this book. Hendrickson describes the secretaries general as very active diplomats who, despite facing very serious constraints, play a critical role in reaching consensus and serve as advocates for unity
