The Czech Republic belongs among countries with a high intake of alcohol, which may cause not only social, but also health problems. The aim of the work is to estimate and analyse the degree of impact of alcohol on mortality in the Czech Republic.
Analysis was performed using the alcohol-attributable fractions (AAF) and using data on mortality from the Demographic Yearbook and data on consumption of alcoholic beverages, both published by the Czech Statistical Office, and using data from the survey on the health conditions of the Czech population which is done by Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic. According to presented estimation alcohol-related deaths represented about 10 % of the total mortality from all causes among men and 2% among women in 2010.
Since 1994 the total alcohol-related mortality slightly increased mainly thanks to double increase of female alcohol-related mortality and in terms of groups of causes of death thanks to increase of mortality fully caused by alcohol. Despite a protective impact of moderate alcohol consumption, alcohol has a negative impact on mortality in the Czech Republic which is bigger for men and in terms of age for people aged 35 to 54 years.
