The aim of the article is to descirbe and assess the changes of the institutions of academic and industrial science in the countries of Middle and Eastern Europe which have been called up by the different strategies of ecnomic reforms, implemented in these countries in teh 90s. Specific attention is paid to the situation of industrial research which has been exposed to radical changes of its environment.
In conclusion the options for the implementation of innovation policy are examined taking into account the available R&D resources, their institutional framework and resources of the political action.
