Reading habits and relationship to the books are formed at pre-school age, and in this respect, the family is still the primary institution in the education and socialization process of acquiring early literacy. The aim of the paper is to pursue the development of early reading skills of children in the fourth grade of primary school (9-10-year-olds) employing data for the Czech Republic from the international survey PIRLS 2011.
Particular attention is given to the influence of cognitive development at preschool age (early reading socialization), i.e. parental education activities (reading, singing, reading letters, word games, etc.) and socio-cultural background of the family (education, occupation of parents along with reading backgrounds and preferences of parents) as well as their interdependence.
