Abstract
The paper gives an overview of diseases affecting the anterior pituitary gland. It is divided into two parts: pathologic processes in the sellar and suprasellar regions and hypopituitarism and its treament.
Selected diseases, their prevalence, aetiology, clinical symptoms, diagnostic; methods and criteria, differential diagnostics and currently used therapeutic procedures are described. Although serious anterior pituitary gland diseases are not common, it is necessary to keep them in mind.
Early diagnosis and treatment of for instance pituitary tumours or hypopituitarism can prevent serious complications and return the patient to everyday life, with full quality of life preserved.
