Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The worldwide tendency of globalization which is heading for uniformity is also evident in the Amazonian area where the big part of indigenous languages are endangered of extinction. The article is meant to give an idea about the situation by examples of huitoto murui and bora, it is based on the data obtained during a field sociolinguistic research in the native settlement Pucaurquillo in Peru.

The first part introduces a profile of the settlement, or rather of the examined communities Huitoto and Bora, and also some extralinguistic factors which have participated in the present state of endangerment. The main part analyzes the area called "behaviour towards language", focused on the intergenerational transmission of indigenous languages huitoto murui and bora.

The disruption of the intimate transmission to younger generation proves the endangerement of the languages. In connection with this issue we consider the influence of the mixed couples, migration and education and last but not least it emphesises the attitude of the speakers towards the language.
