Travel guide as historical sources were completely neglected for a long period of time or they were used just as additional sources of information primarily factual in nature. Nevertheless, during the last twenty years a historical scientific community began to be intensely interested in the systematic study of this kind of historical source.
Significant steps have been taken in this direction by historians in France, the UK and Germany. For this reason the author first presents in her paper the core work of these foreign historians that explore travel guides in an innovative ways and focuses on concepts that arise from their work.
The second part of the paper takes the form of a microprobe. The aim of the author is to apply one of the concepts to specific historical material of the Czech origin.
The examined samples are Czech travel guides about Prague from the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. The author focuses on the way of how the guides present this city to the readers.
