Abstract
Prospective follow-up studies are needed whether or not a cause-effect relationship really exists between recreational swimming and asthma development. Trichloramine, the gas that builds up un the air of indoor pools, giving them their distinctive chlorine smell, has been identified as a cause of asthma and respiratory problems in pool workers.
Even frequent attendance of outdoor chlorinated swimming pool is associated with higher risks of asthma and airways inflammation.
