A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted on an adult sample of Czech population. The aim of the study was to evaluate the different approach of smokers and non-smokers to the oral health.
From the whole set of 1473 respondents there were 411 current smokers, 230 former smokers and 832 non-smokers. Smokers exhibited worse hygienic habits and did not take part in the preventive check-ups as often as the non-smokers.
They were also less satisfied with the appearance of their teeth. Subjectively they apprehended the health status of their teeth, parodontium and oral mucosa as worse in comparison with the non-smokers.
