Short bowel syndrome in adults is usually caused by previous resections of the small intestine for Crohn's disease, small bowel infarction, injury after previous radiotherapy or major abdominal trauma. Main symptoms are weight loss, malnutrition, diarrhoea and malabsorption of water, minerals, macro- and micronutrients.
Short bowel syndrome requires complex treatment (including prevention and therapy of possible complications) based on close interdisciplinary co-operation of gastroenterologists, nutritionists and surgeons.
