During 12 years of using TIPS we treated 23 patients with detected thrombotic obstruction of hepatic veins. As etiology we found myeloproliferative syndrom in two thirds of them:in 6 patients no known cause was detected despite purposefull investigation.First eleven patients were treated using a bare stent, further 12 got an ePTFE covered stent.6 patients died during follow-up, 17 patients adhere to our follow-up care, their shunt is kept patent, their liver functions remain stable and typical complications of portal hypertension do not occure. The use of ePTFE covered stents did significantly reduce occurence of late occlusions (p=0,04).Conclusion: With strict follow-up care and especially using ePTFE covered stents,TIPS may effectively ensure long-term perfusion of the liver and so the liver function in Budd-Chiari syndrome on the base of liver vein thrombosis.
