The aim of this review is to consider to what extent has been the main research intention of the book Stosunki wyznaniowe w relacjach państwo-kościoł między reformacją a oświeceniem by Professor Wojciech Kriegseisen fulfilled, which means to analyse whether one can identify it as a study of comparative approach. As the author admits, he wants to discuss the interactions of an Early Modern state and Church institutions; and at the same time to determine the extent of the influence whereby participants in these medieval political pillars were shaping European society during the Early Modern Period.
This general aim is nevertheless specified in the introduction to this monograph by a distinct geographical demarcation of the study, focused on the areas of the Holy Roman Empire, the Northern Netherlands and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The author’s promise to clarify the dispute over whether it is possible to understand the religious situation of the Polish Early Modern Age within the intentions of the period European norms, or whether it is necessary to consider the interpretation of the Polish state and Polish Church’s relationship as an entity sui generis is given as the primary motivation for research into this topic.
