Hemolytic-uremic syndrome and new treatment options

Abstract

Haemolytic-uraemic syndrome is a relatively rare cause of thrombotic microangiopathy. The prognosis for patients with classical haemolytic-uraemic syndrome is very good, most of them make a complete recovery.

Patients with atypical HUS however suffer long term renal damage in up to 70% of the cases and first attacks of the disease are associated with a high mortality (up to 50%).
