The Central European Sava of Hilandar (1837–1912) and the monastic republic of Mount Athos : A short essay devoted to the 100th death anniversary of the Czech Orthodox Christian monk

Abstract

The article deals with the basic biographical moments of the Orthodox Christian Monk of the Czech origin Sava of Hilandar (Sáva Chilandarec; born Slavibor Kryštof Jonathan Jeremiáš Breüer; 1837–1912). It also presents archival documents (copies of photos, passages from his manuscripts and letters) and his bibliography.

In addition, it summarizes data about his three literary estates (in Prague, Belgrade and in the monastery of Hilandar). The article furthermore maps the field of Sava’s activities (in particular literary – he published his works in Czech, Serbian, German and Bulgarian) and brings up unknown details from his stay in Serbia and on the Mount Athos peninsula.
