Some views on long-term use of bisphosphonates

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

Bisphosphonates are the most commonly used group of drugs administered in the therapy of osteoporosis. They are synthetic substances that deposit in osseous tissue where they inhibit osteoclasts, resulting in markedly reduced bone resorption and increased bone mineralization, volume as well as bone firmness.

Clinical studies have shown their positive effects consisting in increased bone mineral density (BMD) and reduced risk of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures. It has not yet been unambiquously clarified, however, how long bisphosphonates should be administered.
