This article discusses the possibility of a successful interpretation of texts in CDA. The focus is on the non-linguistic context the knowledge of which constitutes the basis for a correct interpretation.
The need of background knowledge is shown using an example of an article from the Serbske Nowiny, the only Sorbian daily newspaper. This article describes a cultural event in such a way that an uninformed reader might interpret the event as an event in Sorbian language.
Referring to the signs which show that the event must have been German, I point out that only if an analyst is able to decode information and thus understand the text, s/he can correctly interpret the communication objectives of the text.
