The text describes the search for a paradigm for student ethnomusicological research in South Moravia. Instead of a research of traditional music mainly as research of genres, which means mostly a description of decontextualized objects, we tent toward understanding of music as a social object.
For this kind of research the relations between musicians and listeners, as well as researcher and researched are important. While "traditional" genres, which are documented from the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, inevitably disappear from this region or take a different shape of function, the fact of active musicial performance, functions of music that have been similar for decades and the importance of music in community life remain clear.
