The Basel Epigram and Prague Balts

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The article refers to the results of the palaeographic and codicologic research of Jos Schaeken. If Prague localisation of the Old Prussian Basel Epigram is correct, we are able to closer identify the manuscript scribe Petrus Fru.

A candidate to the role of the author of the oldest Baltic text appears to be a Prussian called Petr of New Town of Königsberg which was granted municipal rights of Prague Old Town in 1382. Together with other documentarily proved Prussians, Petr from Lyvenike presents a qualitatively different milieu: not then students of Charles University but Prague’s citizens probably associated with prince Butautas’ Prague court.
