Narrative transformations: events - story - narration - presentation of narration

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2004

Abstract

The text is an attempt to specify the nature of the narrative transformations in fiction. First the author presents a critical view of some of the influential and well-known models and concepts of narrative (Šklovskij, Petrovskij, Tomaševskij, Genette, Stierle) and their terminological inconsistency.

In the main part of the text, the author turns the attention to the own model of the narrative transformations, which consists of four narrative levels: Geschehen (events) - Geschichte (story) - Erzählung (narration) - Präsentation der Erzählung (presentation of narration). The discussion is supported by empirical material (Puškin, Čechov) and theoretical points of departure are constantly verified.
