The paper deals with possibilities of using formal and content aspects of the oral tradition in teaching a foreign language. It is based on the general relationship between language and culture, the integral part of which is the oral tradition.
Furthermore, it analyzes key documents regulating language education and also the most widely used textbooks for teaching Russian in Czech schools from the view point of the use of the oral tradition as a study text. The final part is devoted to specific possibilities of the application of the oral tradition in teaching Russian.
